Mein erstes Wörterbuch with illustrations by Katja Senner is part of the Ravensburger Mini Steps series, and is definitely one of Mausi’s current favourites. I think that it must be the wonderful, bright illustrations on each page depicting things that she sees around her everyday that make this book so appealing to her.
‘Truck’ is a big word for her at the moment (in English) and so she really enjoys the vehicle page! And that’s part of what makes this book so great for mama and papa as well…although it is a German word book, there’s no reason we can’t also go through all of the words in English!
Each different series of items covers 2 pages, and after the vehicles are a selection of toys, then household items, things that you might find in the bathroom, bedtime items, food, animals (another favourite), grocery store items, backyard animals and toys, and finally articles of clothing. A lot of words are covered, but almost every item is something that Mausi encounters in her daily life. It’s been a lot of fun to watch her start to pick out more and more items that she is familiar with.
The pages are sturdy and recommendations on the back of the book suggest a reading age of 12-18 months, although it wasn’t until Mausi was close to 18 months before she really started to enjoy the book.
We highly recommend this as a great first word and picture book.Title: Mein erstes Wörterbuch
