Bedtime at this house is definitely in need of a little tweaking. Or perhaps a major overhaul would be more appropriate! Our little Mausi has been going to sleep far too late (on average somewhere between 9 and 10pm!) and that just isn’t working for anyone anymore. We’re going to give it our best shot to move bedtime forward by at least 2 hours. I would really like to see her asleep between 6:30 and 7:30 pm. And with about an hour lead up time I see vast shuffling of our evening programme in the near future…
After starting to read The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers I have an idea of how I think we will proceed…
Consistent Routine. Something that has been lacking, and something I think we definitely need to start with. I think up until this point I have underestimated how important consistency is to children, and so without further ado we’re taking steps to fix that.
- I love this evening chart over at Chocolate Eyes ~ I think we might need to have something similar to pin up on our bathroom wall…
- Special ‘night wool cover(s)’ while she still wears her diaper at night ~ I gather putting on pj’s can often be a key clue for children during their bedtime routines. With Mausi’s big cloth bum (we do love our Sandy’s at night, but they aren’t exactly trim…) pj’s don’t always happen. Instead I will make an effort to get Mausi a couple of special wool night-time covers and pj tops for her to wear only at night.
- Consistent time at which the bedtime routine starts ~ this has been a major stumbling point for us, as we often find ourselves pushing it later, either because we have had friends over for dinner, or we have had dinner with family. We will just need to start seeing family during the day and for lunches, and having friends over for an early dinner and still get Mausi off to bed on time. (I gather that once a good bedtime routine is estalished, having the odd evening breakng routine is not such a big deal…)
Tackling moving Mausi into her own bed (right next to ours), and the cessation of night-time nursing, is something we will get to after we have established an earlier bed-time. All part of our summer sleep plan, but we are not pushing each step…it will all happen in good time.
